The Importance of Core Skills (as seen in One+ ONSITE)
"'Meeting professionals own a distinct skill set', says Larissa J. Schultz, CMP, 'and that knowledge is essential to success.' Schultz co-presented the Core Skills Workship on Saturday [July 23], where she taught delegates industry verbiage and acronyms as well as the best ways to speak with suppliers, planners and senior execs.
'I think some planners are overlooking core skills,' she said. 'People skip that core skill perspective and don't take the time to learn the processes on an event-planning timeline and the event-planning cycle and the individual steps that lead up to it. It's not just the event - it's what happens before, it's what happens during, and it's what happens after.'
Schultz told her delegates to take advantage of educational opportunities - whether chapter, regional, college, national or international. She also noted that event management degrees and certificates programs have become prolific in the last eight years. 'Anything out there that offers a degree or that teaches core skills is critical,' she said. Schultz urged delegates to reach out to MPI. 'It's a great way to continue to evolve your education,' she said. 'And it's a great refresher for those who, like me, have been in the industry for years and may get complacent in the way that we do our jobs.'" One+ ONSITE, July 25, 2011

Unwelcome Surprises
In the Fall 2008, edition of Southern California Meetings & Events, Larissa Schultz, CMP, shared the following story:
"PLANNER: Larissa J. Schultz, CMP, owner of LJS Meeting Strategies LLC and vice president of education for Meeting Professionals International (MPI) Southern California Chapter.
PROBLEM: I was planning the annual installation of the incoming board of directors for the California Association of REALTORS. It was around noon on the day of the event and I was finalizing the script for the program with the production team, the banquet staff and the band to ensure proper serving of 700 attendees and a smooth presentation which would lead into the evening entertainment. After we finished, I was notified that the governor of California was going to arrive and give a presentation that evening-he had just confirmed he could fit it into his schedule.
Within 10 minutes, the governor's advance security team came to meet with me and we re-hatched the plan, the script and the serving process as well as walked the space to call out high-security areas.
SOLUTION: The lesson was to remain calm at all times. Having a good plan in place and clearly communicated to all parties involved makes it much easier to adjust to last minute changes. My philosophy on planning since this incident has been, "We plan so that there is a foundation on which change can occur."
